What was the highlight of Desert Rose Hotel

Wonderful

We got the family room on the top floor (#11). The unspoilt views to the beach front and sunsets from our bedroom window and the balcony outside made our days. The room itself is exactly as described in the pictures in booking.com, nothing fancy but all correct. We stayed in the room using the fan only as during the hottest part of the day we were out and at night time we felt that the fan and open windows (with the mosquito net) were enough. But, the room has an A/C that you can use upon an extra charge of 200 Php/ night. The breakfast was also very tasty (the pancakes in particular), and according to portions in the Philippines (do not expect a tower of pancakes with a tower of bacon). They also have a series of services upon request, such as motorbike rental (500 Php/24h), el nido to puerto princesa shuttle (600 Php/person), laundry services, they sell cold water, beers and snacks. Overall, we were delighted there and extended our initial booking of 2 nights up to 4 nights.

We had a couple of misunderstandings in terms of the payments, and we usually like to pay as we go, meaning that if we request the extra nights we pay at the moment, similarly with other services. Usually, that reduces issues in terms of hidden costs later on. However, it seemed that that caused few issues as we had to remind them that we had already paid. To be fair, once we said it, the issue was solved, but I feel that they should give receipts or keep a better track of what customers had paid so that kind of misunderstanding do not happen

This hotel has way more potential!

The wifi was the strongest I've seen in Palawan! The male owner is very friendly and helpful and always in for a chat and gives good tips. The ocean view from the terrace is impressive. Terrace has direct access to the beach. Free but simple breakfast (rice/pancake/bread + egg).

They seem to be a bit frugal here. I wanted to book another night but somehow they wanted to charge me (slightly) more than the price I had paid on Booking, even though I booked directly with them. I was slightly surprised about that. They have water refill, but every time you fill a big bottle it's 10 pesos. The male owner told me he was gonna write it down in a booklet every time I filled it up so I could pay afterwards, but then his wife suggested that nothing had been written down and I should explicitly tell them everytime I refill, even if she was standing next to it and it wasn't like I was doing it secretly. I would wholeheartedly recommend the hotel to just make water free for guests. I mean I paid 1600 pesos per night for the room and then you want to go through all this effort to count how many times I fill my bottle and let me look for 60 pesos change at the end? People love free water (and free coffee and tea), and it will definitely earn itself back! There is aircon in the room but it's switched off and cannot be used. The room was extremely damp. I had the feeling I could not breathe at night without the window open and the fan on. Even then, all my clothes were constantly wet. Towels never dried during the night. I slept poorly. The shower was not hot. Wardrobe in the room was old and a bit dirty and a big spider came out of it when I opened it for the first time. If you don't have a motorbike, it will be hard to reach a restaurant or the town without taking a tricycle every time. Quite a few local guests who were loud at breakfast (or even playing music on the terrace) from 7am, it would be helpful if the staff told them to be more quiet.

We liked the size of the room and bathroom, spacious for the usual 3-star hotel. The owners were nice and accomodating.

Maybe they can install shower heater and free mineral water refill.

Nice find!

Perfect location away from the crowded town. Don't expect the luxury, but enjoy the hidden place, allthough you reach ot by a dusty road. Right at the beachfront with amazing sunset view. Small family run hotel with very friendly and helpful staff, ready to organise you any trip or service you need or order some food or provide you with cold drinks any time of a day. Only hot drinking water available. Simple breakfast, served outside on the balcony. Basic rooms, great outdoors. Loved it.
